Micky and Steve weren’t horsing around with their western riding experience. The duo spent six nights at The Hideout in Wyoming, a family-run working cattle ranch sat in the beautiful Shell Valley of the Big Horn Basin, before a brief pit stop to explore Yellowstone National Park and Salt Lake City.
Booked through Abbotts Travel, it was the trip of a lifetime and Micky was kind enough to report back…
“If you are interested in a western riding experience, you could not go wrong with The Hideout.
The accommodation was first class, we had comfortable beds and lovely views from the cabin. The staff were also fantastic, nothing was too much for them and everyone made us feel welcome. Another guest mentioned they would have liked a kettle in their room; the following day Peter the director bought one for them. I can’t praise this place enough.
The food was excellent and whilst it seemed expensive, it was great value when you take into account how much you get for your money.
I could not fault the horses and there were various rides available. Morning and afternoon rides were usually about two-three hours long and all day rides rounding up cattle were around six hours, with a 30 minute break for lunch.
They offer a class for novices where they will have you riding before lunch and the head wrangler gave a class on how they train the horses, which meant guests had the chance to find out about his lifestyle on the ranch.
For those who don’t want to spend all day riding, The Hideout also offers clay pigeon shooting, archery and fly fishing.
If anybody is interested in this type of holiday, believe me you would not regret it. I just wish I was 30 years younger so I could go back every year.
We were lucky enough to finish the trip with two nights in Yellowstone National Park and one in Salt Lake City. Yellowstone was another fantastic place, we stayed at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, which was definitely a much livelier hotel. Salt Lake City was very clean, with a lovely shopping mall and fantastic restaurants.
Thanks to Abbotts for an excellent service, we are already thinking about next year’s trip, and Seattle is looking like a good option.”
