Blue Waters Resort & Spa, Antigua

You only live once, it's said, but we decided to ignore that and see this Caribbean resort two ways.

The first was in person with a site visit arranged and hosted by the lovely Gina Papadopolous. Five times this decade, Blue Waters has been crowned as Antigua's best hotel, and the resort spreads across 17 acres of prime island beachfront.

The design and atmosphere provide a sense of relaxation, and although the resort was at nearly full occupancy there was a remarkable sense of space and calm, amplified by the staff's quiet professionalism.

Guest rooms were spacious and very comfortable, but the Cove Suites were a cut above, offering seclusion, sunbathing and an infinity pool, all of which overlooks the wedding gazebo and the deep blue sea beyond.

A trio of villas also impress, in three, four and five bedrooms respectively. Each comes with luxury as standard, and quick connection to the resort's concierge via your own private mobile phone.

Gina proved to be a superb ambassador for the resort, unflappable and in tune with the place and its people.

In a futile attempt to turn an afternoon's visit into something more permanent, Danny and Jo trashed their rental car in the resort's car park. It didn’t work.

Living Retreats, Antigua

As we said, we saw this resort two ways.

The other was less direct, but equally enlightening.

Back in London, Alexis and Carly were invited by W&O to find out more about Living Retreats.

Hosted at Blue Waters, it's aimed at those wishing to kickstart, sharpen or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

They focus on an alliterative plan: retreat, rebalance, recharge, results, designed to give you personal attention, a detailed consultation, testing and analysis, advice and spa treatments.

It's a fast-track programme with sustainable results, and it takes place in the Antiguan heat.

Living Retreats run from 1 May to 31 October 2017.
